Accessibility statement

This site is built to be usable by as many people as possible, including people using screen readers, keyboard-only navigation, magnification or reduced-motion settings.

Conformance status

This site partially conforms to WCAG 2.2 level AA. “Partially conforms” means most of the standard is met, and the parts that are not are listed below rather than left for you to discover.

We have deliberately not claimed full conformance. This build has been measured against the standard and checked in a browser, but it has not yet been tested with screen-reading software, and until it has, a stronger claim would not be honest.

What this site does

  • Every page has exactly one H1, and headings descend in order without skipping a level. The previous site had no H1 at all on 31 of its 63 pages.
  • All text and interactive controls meet WCAG 2.2 AA contrast (4.5:1 for body text, 3:1 for large text and UI borders), measured rather than estimated.
  • A skip link is the first focusable element on every page.
  • Every control is reachable and operable by keyboard, and focus is always visible. It is never removed without a replacement.
  • The specialist directory, the conditions content and the news archive are all in the HTML and fully readable with JavaScript turned off. Search, filtering and the map are enhancements on top.
  • The map is not the only way to find a specialist. Nothing appears on it that is not also in the list beside it: every practice, its suburb and state, and its phone number wherever ANZSREI holds one.
  • Animation is suppressed for anyone whose system asks for reduced motion, including the map’s fly-to and every list transition. One exception is deliberate: the photographs in the homepage hero still cross-fade, because they change without moving.
  • Form fields have real labels, and required fields are marked in text as well as by attribute, not by colour alone.
  • Result counts are announced to screen readers once you stop typing, rather than on every keystroke.
  • Images that carry meaning have alternative text; images that are decorative are hidden from assistive technology instead of being given filler text.
  • Text can be resized to 200% and the page reflows to a single column without loss of content or horizontal scrolling.

Known limitations

These are the things we know are not right yet. They are being worked on.

No assistive-technology testing yet
The build has been checked against the standard and in a browser, but it has not been driven with NVDA, JAWS or VoiceOver. Until it has, this statement cannot claim full conformance.
Documents are not covered
Several consensus statements are PDFs held by ANZSREI. Those documents have not been assessed and may not be accessible. Where a statement is missing entirely the page says so.
Map interaction is limited
The map can be panned and zoomed by keyboard, but individual markers are not in the tab order. This is why every location is also a row in the list, which is fully keyboard-operable.
Third-party map tiles
Map tiles and labels come from OpenFreeMap. Their rendering is outside our control, which is one reason the map is never the only route to information.

Telling us about a problem

If any part of this site stops you getting the information you need, please tell us, including which page, what you were trying to do, and what assistive technology you use if any. We will reply and we will tell you what we are going to do about it.

How this was assessed

Self-assessment by the development team, using automated checks, measured colour-contrast ratios, and manual keyboard testing in current versions of Chrome, Firefox and Safari.
